San Francisco Little League Red Sox Baseball 2011

Brian Wilson has lost his composure. Roger Clemens has snapped. Pedro Martinez once threw an old man named Don Zimmer to the ground. Lou Piniella is hardly the first, nor will he be the last, manager to toss a base, throw his hat or kick some dirt. Baseball is a sport that honors its past far more than the other major sports. Fans, pundits and players often hark back to the past to compare players, coaches and teams across generations. One item often lost among the more traditional stats of hits, wins, RBI and saves is the meltdowns throughout the years. Players and managers in the majors, minors and independent leagues all have gone crazy at one time or another. Luckily for historians, many of those are captured forever on video. Kenny Rogers ironically got filmed throwing a cameraman to the ground. Delmon Young’s bat got flipped into the umpire. Hal McRae gave us a commanding performance that we still watch today. In the spirit of these giants of the game, giants of meltdown, it’s time to look back at the top meltdowns in baseball. Who doesn’t remember the first time they played catch with their dad? And who doesn’t remember where they were the first time they saw that crazy bald skipper doing the crawl to the mound during his 15 minutes of shame? If you happened to miss any of these gems, catch up now, and let us know if we missed any that deserve some extra attention.
